The site of the blue plaque was once the home of Wakefield's Wool Market. The wool trade made Wakefield a busy and bustling centre of commerce, hence the number of banks that once stood only a short walk away. The Wool Market later moved to the area known as Cheapside and the surrounding warehouses and yards.
