This very fine Victorian building was designed for The Wakefield and Barnsley Union Bank, which moved here from smaller premises a little further down Westgate. The bank later merged with one of the High Street banks and became the home of the Wakefield Building Society until in the 1970's when the society became national news with the embezzlement of funds. The Society was saved by the Halifax Building Society but sadly today the once magnificent building, both inside and out, is now a bar - one of many on Westgate housed in very fine and once proud buildings.
