Capt. Simon William Richard Mewburn

Capt. Simon William Richmond Mewburn was the son of William Richmond Mewburn and Elizabeth Fanny (nee savory) who had married in the late spring/early summer of 1870 at Wycombe. Simon served in the 14th Kings Hussars and fought in France during 1914-1915. In 1916 he was in Mesopotamia (Iraq) and was KIA on 21 May 1916 aged 31. He is remembered on the Basra Memorial that contains more than 40,000 members of the Commonwealth forces who died between 1914 and August 1921.

The memorial was moved in 1997 from the quay of the naval dockyard. The memorial now stands 32km along the road to Nasiriyah.
