Hugh Burns Hugh was the son of John and Jessie Burns of Maule Tce, Gullane (after the war). Hugh enlisted in Edinburgh, signing his Attestation Papers on 16 November 1914 aged 20 years and 315 days, a butcher - into the Cameron Highlanders. His address at the time was 3 Lammer View, Gullan. Hugh was 5' 3¾" tall with a fully expanded chest of 34" and weighing 115lbs. His father, John, was given as his next of kin. His service records give information regarding him being posted in the BEF and in May of 1915 was wounded whilst serving in the 1st Btn. For both of his woundings he was sent home to the UK. He also received a GSW in the left leg on 18 January 1916. Whilst serving in the 6th Btn on 21 October 1917 he was reported missing and later recorded as being a Prisoner of War. On the 29 January 1918 Pte S/15300 died at Friedrichsfeld? Prisoner of War Camp of pheumonia and rests in Cologne Southern Cemetery along with over 3200 other casualties of war. Hugh was awarded the 1914-1915 Star, the British War Medal 1914-1919 and the Victory Medal.
Note :- there is a letter from Hugh's father asking for a true notification of death as there was a date difference as an insurance company were not accepting the paperwork with the date discrepancy and actual events - a true copy was later sent to the family. Mrs Jessie Burns of Muirfield Lodge, Gullane was sent the 'Scroll' in respect of Hugh on 18 March 1920

George Dishington George Dishington, was born in Haddington and served as L/Cpl 13787 in the Royal Scots. He died on 8 July 1916 aged 22 and is remembered on the Thiepval Memorial to the Missing. He left a wife, Mary
W H Robertson-Durham William Hugh Robertson-Durham served as a Captain in the Cameronians (Scottish Rifles). He died on 25 September 1915 and is remembered on the Loos Memorial along with over 20,000 other casualties whose final resting place is known only unto their God
John Elmslie John served in the Seaforth Highlanders as Pte 451 and died on 22 April 1916 and is remembered on the Basra Memorial
David Elmslie Possibly, brother of the above, was the son of John and Marion of 5 Hopetoun Place, Gullane. He served as Lance Corporal 13785 in the Royal Scots. He died on 19 November 1916 aged 22 and is also remembered on the Thiepval Memorial to the Missing.

James Harper James Harper, the son of Alexander served in the Royal Scots as Drummer 29519.He died in the police station, Gullane on 5 March 1920 aged 21 and rests in the local kirkyard

George McCoach George McCoach was born in Gullane on the 4th August 1893, the son of George and Mary Ann McCoach of Lammerview Terrace, Gullane. He served in the Canadian Machine Gun Corps as Pte 51317. On his attestation papers he gave his occupation as that of painter and had previously served in the Lt Infantry. George was 21 years and 7 months when he enlisted and took his medical in Winnipeg. He was 5' 7" tall with a 33" girth. He had a fair complexion, grey eyes and light brown hair. He was a Presbyterian. The medical found he had a scar on the back of his right hand. He died on 9 September 1916 and is remembered along with many others on the Theipval Memorial to the Missing.

Gavin Paul Gavin was the son of Paul and Jane Gill Paul of Dunstane, West Coates, Edinburgh and served as a 2nd Lieut in the 2nd Dragoon Guards ( Queen's Bays). He was aged just 21 when he died on 30 October 1914 and is rememered on the Menin Gate Memorial, Ypres
Alexander Purves Possibly, Alexander Purves of the Royal Scots, served as Pte 251433 and is remembered on the Ploegsteert Memorial

David Sibbald Possibly, David the son of George and Elizabeth of 12 Rodney St, Edinburgh. He served as Pte 351330 in the Royal Scots and died on 27 July 1916 aged 19 and is remembered on the Theipval Memorial to the Missing.

Geoffrey F Thatcher G F C Thatcher served in the MGC as Pte 64270 and died on 22 December 1917. He is remembered in St Julien Dressing Station Cemetery, Langemark-Poeklkappelle, Belgium

George Waldie Possibly, George, who served in the KOSB's as Pte 10799 and died on 4 June 1915 and is remembered on the Helles Memorial, Turkey along with over 20,000 other casualties who have no known grave.

Richd H Whitecross * Richard Henry Whitecross served in the AIF. He was born in Gullane and on his Attestation Papers stated he was a British Subject. He was aged 32 years 7 months and gave his trade as that of Bricklayer. His father was John Whitecross of Sunnyside, Gullane. He stated that he had previously served in the military and he signed at Dimboola in the state of Victoria on 3 February 1915. He was 5' 7 ½" tall, weighed 11 st. Had a 36" chest, dark complexion, light blue eyes and black hair and was of the Presbyterian faith. He had a scar on the front of his left shin **** from ulcers and abra*** on back of left forearm. He was given punishment on numerous occasions - one being AWL from 25- 29 of Marh 1916 in Etaples, he was given 21 days CB and forfeits 5 days pay. A few months later he was drunk and AWL from 9am - 10pm on the 9 June 1916, this time 28 days FP and 29 days loss of pay. In London he was AWOL and apprehended by the CP's.This goes on and on 5 January 1917 he is at Monte Video where he is again drunk whilst in camp and defaults on roll call, for this he is awarded 168 hours detention by Col. Browne. Richard reports sick to Brigade on numerous occasions with bronchitis and asthma. He died on 3 January 1918 at 9.53am and rests in Brighton General Cemetery, Victoria, Australia - at peace. There is much more information to be had about Richard but for reasons has been ommitted from this entry.
