Alfred Baker | Alfred was born in 1896 the son ofWalter and Mary Baker of Brook Cottage, Dane Hill. He served in the Royal Sussex Regiment as Pte SD3828. Alfred died on 4 June 1916 aged 19 and rests in Cambrin Churchyard Extension |

Ernest Baker | Ernest was the brother of Alfred above and enlisted with his brother into the Royal Sussex Regt as Pte SD/3830. Ernest was KIA on 13 April 1917 also aged 19 and he rests in Bethune Town Cemetery | |
Matthias Baker | Mathias was the son of Elias and Mary Elizabeth Baker of Yew Tree House, Chelwood Gate and born in 1897 in Fletchling. He served on the Royal Sussex Regt as Pted 24225 and was KIA aged 22 on 3 July 1918 and he rests in Harponville Communal Cemetery Extension. | |
Spencer Baker | Spencer was the son of Spencer and Susan Baker of Forest Farm, Chelwood Gate. In 1901 Spencer snr was a farmer with some of his sons working for him, but Spencer jnr was carpenter who later worked for the C of E. Spencer served as a Lieut. in the Canadian Infantry and was KIA on 26 October 1917 aged 37. He rests in Passcendaele New British Cemetery | |
Charles Baxter | Charles was the son of Ambrose William and Elizabeth Baxter of Baxter's Lane, Chelwood Gate. He enlisted onto the Australian Imperial Force as Pte 596241 ( M Coy Training Depot). He died on 20 June 1915 aged 32 and rests in Pine Ridge Memorial Park, Australia along with over 170 other casualties. He left a widow - Beatrice of Tonkins Lane, Rowena Parade, Richmond, Victoria, Aus. | |
Reginald Bennett | Reginald was born in 1889, the son of Caesar and Charlotte Bennett of Field View, Chelwood Gate. He served as Pte G3402 in the Royal Sussex Regt. He was KIA on 31 July 1917 aged 28 and he rests in New Irish Farm Cemetery | |
Charles Billings | Charles was born in 1870 the son of Edwin and Margaret Billings of Chapel Cottage, Chelwood Gate. He served as L/ Cpl p/13667 in the Military Foot Police. He drowned on 10 October 1918 when RMS Leinster was sunk by a German submarine in the Irish Sea and he rests in Grangegorman Military Cemetery, Dublin. RMS Leinster was bound for Holyhead, carrying 771 passengers and crew incl. 22 postal sorters, 180 civilians (inluding children), but mainly carrying military personnel -either returning from or going on leave. Only some 16 miles from Ireland at around 10am she was torpedoes on the port side. An attempt was made to return to port but with reduced speed and slowly sinking the odds were not good. Lifeboats were launched but a second torpedoe struck, the Leinster sank shortly afterwards. The majority of the fatalities being killed in the sinking. Other nearby vessels came to rescue, taking the casualties to Victoria Wharf, Kingstown. Over 520 people died in the sinking |

John enlisted like many others from the area enlisted in to the Royal Sussex Regt and became L/Cpl G1646 in the 2nd Btn. John was KIA on 9 May 1916 aged 20 and he is remembered on Le Touret Memorial | |
Fritz Carter | Fritz was the son of David and Sarah Carter of Nursery Farm, Chelwood Gate. He served as a L/Cpl in the Royal Sussex Regt. no. SD/3551. He died of wounds on 2 July 1916 aged 19 and he rests Merville Communal, Cemetery | |
Denys Corbett-Wilson | Denys was born in 1882, the son of William Henry C Wilson and Ada Caroline nee Corbett whom he married in the summer of 1877. Denys served as a Lieutenant in the Royal Flying Corps. Denys obtained his pilots licence in 1912 in France and became the first man to fly to Ireland in record time, later that same year. In 1913 he resigned his Commision but by 1914 he was made 2nd Lieut (on probation) on the Reserve Lists. He was killed when his aircraft (Morane L) was show down over German lines on 10 May 1915 aged 32. He rests in Cabaret-Rouge British Cemetery. He had previously been buried with full military honours by the Germans at Fournes | |
George Deacon | He served as Pte SD/5348 in the Royal Sussex Regt., and was KIA on 7 August 1916 aged 23 and rests in Delville Wood Cemetery | |
Gilbert Deacon | Gilbert was born in 1897,the son of Gilbert and Caroline Amelia Deacon of Chelwood Gate. He served in the MGC as Pte 14114 and was KIA on 1 April 1918 aged 21. He rests in Peronne Communal Cemetery Extension | |
Jack Deacon | Jack born in 1898, served as Pte PO/17344 in th RMLI. He was KIA on 12 May 1915 aged just 17 and is remembered on the Portsmouth Naval Memorial along with many others who final resting place is known only unto their God | |
Tom Etherton | Edmund Thomas Etherton was orn in 1882, the son of Edmund and Eliza. He served as Sergt., PS/1795 in the Middlesex Regt., and was KIA on 13 April 1918 aged 35. He is remembered on the Ploegsteert Memorial along with many others who have no known grave. He left a widow, Ethel nee Coppard (sister of John Coppard shown above) | |
Jesse Farncombe | Jesse Knight Farmcombe was born in 1892,the son of Charles James and Naomi Farmcombe of Tanyard Farm, Dane Hill. He served in the Australian Inf., as Pter 1498. Jesse was KIA on 10 August 1915 aged 23 during the Gallipoli conflict. He rests in the 7th Field Ambulace Cemetery, Turkey | |
John Goslett | John was born in 1895 in Bletchingley, the son of George and Helen Goslett (Gossett). George and his family lived at Highfields, East Grinstead in 1901 where he gave his occupation as 'living on own means', the family later lived at Chelwood Gate. Frank Hearn | Frank was born in Byfleet, Surrey in 1894, the son of Benjamin and Sarah Hearn and was one of 6 children in the 1901 census. Frank joined the Royal Sussex Regt., and became Pte G/3582. He was KIA on 11 June 1917 aged 23 and he rests in Voormezeele Enclosure | |

William Manners | William was the son of James and Caroline and born in 1879. He was also the brother in law to the Hills brothers (above) as his wife Agnes was their sister. William Newnham | William was born in 1879 in Dane Hill, the son of Thomas and Susan. In the 1901 census Thomas worked as an Ag. Lab. as did his two sons. Fred Padgham | Fred was born in 1893 in Fletching, the son of Thomas and Esther - Thomas worked as a domestic gardener/groom. Fred served in the Royal Sussex Regt., as Pte SD/5379 and was KIA on 18 April 1918 aged 25. He restsin Woburn Abbey Cemetery, France. | |

Charles Steadman | Charles was born in 1897, the son of Jasper and Fanny Steadman of Woodgate Cottages, Dane Hill. In 1901, the 3 year old Charles was living with his grandparents, William and Fanny Bates - William worked as a foreman on a farm.
